The Innovation Studio is devoted to enabling and empowering innovators to have broad impact on our world. One Innovation Studio team leader remarked, “Before I found the Innovation Studio, I had to dumpster-dive for resources.” That team is now responsible for 16 patents. Success stories abound, and we feature three such successes at this year’s forum: See3D, technology to study high-mountain glaciers in South America and the Rollator.
The unique effectiveness of our movable Innovation Studio space inspired the Office of the CIO to award a $63,000 Informal Learning Grant so that we could build and open a second, permanent studio in Pomerene Hall at Ohio State dubbed the Innovation Studio – Mirror Lake. + About The Ohio State University College of Nursing's Innovation Studio:
At the Innovation Studio, we believe people, not equipment, are our most valuable technology. Operated by The Ohio State University College of Nursing and aligned with the college’s mission to dream, discover and deliver a healthier world, the Innovation Studio is designed to empower a diverse population of Ohio State students, faculty and staff to try, fail, succeed and ultimately bring their innovative ideas to fruition. The Innovation Studio provides a platform for innovators and budding entrepreneurs to gain access to the funding, resources and network to create products that can impact the world.
The physical design of the Innovation Studio is a 16’-by-18’ space made from Plexiglas walls and foam board. Housed inside the studio is an array of tools ranging from hand tools to 3-D printers, from computing hardware to a laser cutter. In the spirit of inter-professional collaboration, the movable Innovation Studio tours Ohio State’s campus, stopping at different units for a half-semester to expand reach and opportunity. At the end of each tour stop, inter-professional teams present their innovations to a panel of professionals from across campus at our Innovation Showcase to request funding and resources, they believe they need to be successful.
